Smart Grid

A smart grid should be developed to become the backbone of this new system. It will allow both for the rapid integration of more renewables and the reduction in technical losses and the theft of electricity.

For example, the current electrical grid allows electricity to flow only one-way from large plants to the consumer. It must evolve into a two-way flow in the future. This will empower consumers and communities to produce their own energy. Any excess will feed back into the grid or into local micro-grids. Such decentralized model will reduce waste and theft and will open the door to diverse renewable energy sources, from rooftop solar panels and grid-scale solar to wind farms and individual or community storage. Private energy providers developing local production and energy efficiency services will also be able to develop and integrate into the grid.

The rapid deployment of the smart grid will also accelerate the adoption of electrical vehicles and the potential integration of their batteries into the grid and utility storage system.
